संक्षिप्त वरमहालक्ष्मी पूजा विधानम्

ॐ नारायणाय परिपूर्णगुणार्णवाय विश्वोदयस्थितिलयोन्नतिप्रदाय ।
ज्ञानप्रदाय विबुधासुरसौख्यदुःखदः सत्कारणाय वितताय नमो नमस्ते ॥
तदेव लग्नं सुदिनं तदेव तदेव ताराबलं चन्द्रबलं तदेव ।
विद्याबलं दैवबलं तदेव लक्ष्मीपते तेऽङ्घ्रियुगं स्मरामि ॥
शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् । प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥
आगमार्थं तु देवानां गमनार्थं तु रक्षसाम् । कुरु घण्टारवं तत्र देवताह्वानलाञ्छनम् ॥ - Stating the Samvatsara, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and other calendar details, resolve to perform the Sri Varamahalakshmi Puja with Dhyana, Avahana and the sixteen Upacharas, for the pleasure of Sri Lakshmi-Narayana and for the stated purposes of good desires, knowledge, flawless devotio, worldly disattachment and repeated opportunity to perform this Vrata every year.

परमात्मनि अचलभक्तिसिद्ध्यर्थं भगवतः श्रीलक्ष्मीनारायणस्य प्रीतिं कामयमानोऽहम्
वर्षे वर्षे कर्तव्यं एतद्वर्षप्रयुक्त कर्तव्यकेन श्रीवरमहालक्ष्म्याः ध्यानावाहनादि षोडशोपचार पूजां करिष्ये ॥ - First perform Yamuna Puja outside near Tulasi Brundaavana and bring that kalasha inside for use as the holy river water for pooja.
यमुना पूजां समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform the Kalashodaka Abhimantrana, then sprinkle the sanctified Kalasha water over the Puja Mantapa, Puja materials and everything being used for the worship. (Kalasha to include water, coin, Haldi, Kumkum, Gandha, flowers and Akshata with 5 mango leaves with coconut on top)
कलशस्य मुखे विष्णुः कण्ठे रुद्रः समाश्रितः | मूले तत्र स्थितो ब्रह्मा मध्ये मातृगणाः स्मृताः । कुक्षौ तु सागराः सर्वे सप्तद्वीपा वसुन्धरा | ऋग्वेदोऽथ यजुर्वेदः सामवेदोऽथर्वणः । | अङ्गैश्च सहिताः सर्वे कलशं तु समाश्रिताः | अत्र गायत्री सावित्री शान्तिः पुष्टिकरी तथा । आयन्तु देवपूजार्थम् अभिषेकार्थसिद्धये | कलशयोः भागीरथ्यादि तीर्थानि आवाहयामि ॥ ॥ - Setup a Ganapati idol or a single betel nut. Worship it with Haridra and Kumkuma, and then perform Shodashopachara Puja.
अदौ निर्विघ्नता सिद्ध्यर्थं महागणपत्यन्तर्गत विश्वम्भरस्य ध्यानावाहनादि षोडशोपचार पूजां करिष्ये ॥
निषुसीद गणपते गणेषु त्वामाहुर्विप्रतं कवीनाम् । न ऋते त्वत्क्रियते किञ्चनारे महामर्कं मघवन् चित्रमर्च ॥
ॐ भूः गणपतिम् आवाहयामि ।
ॐ भुवः गणपतिम् आवाहयामि ।
ॐ स्वः गणपतिम् आवाहयामि ।
ॐ भूर्भुवःस्वः गणपतिम् आवाहयामि ॥
अनेन गणपत्यन्तर्गत विश्वम्भर पूजा कर्मणा भगवान् श्रीभारतीरमण मुख्यप्राणान्तर्गत विश्वम्भर प्रीयताम् ।
श्रीकृष्णार्पणमस्तु ॥ - Perform Dvarapalaka Puja.
पूर्वद्वारे श्रियै नमः जयाय नमः विजयाय नमः । दक्षिणद्वारे श्रियै नमः बलाय नमः प्रबलाय नमः । पश्चिमद्वारे श्रियै नमः नन्दाय नमः सुनन्दाय नमः । उत्तरद्वारे श्रियै नमः कुमुदाय नमः कुमुदाक्षाय नमः । द्वारपालक पूजां समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform the Prana Pratishthapana.
अस्य श्रीवरमहालक्ष्मी देवता प्राणप्रतिष्ठापनमहामन्त्रस्य ब्रह्मा-विष्णु-महेश्वर ऋषयः । ऋग्यजुःसामाथर्वाणि छन्दांसि । प्राणशक्तिः परादेवता ।
श्रीवरमहालक्ष्मी प्राणप्रतिष्ठापने विनियोगः ॥
ह्रां अङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां नमः । ह्रीं तर्जनीभ्यां नमः । ह्रूं मध्यमाभ्यां नमः । ह्रैं अनामिकाभ्यां नमः ।
ह्रौं कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः । ह्रः करतलकरपृष्ठाभ्यां नमः ॥ ह्रां हृदयाय नमः । ह्रीं शिरसे स्वाहा ।
ह्रूं शिखायै वषट् । ह्रैं कवचाय हुं । ह्रौं नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् । ह्रः अस्त्राय फट् । इति दिग्बन्धः ॥ - Meditate upon Sri Varamahalakshmi.
पद्मासने पद्मकरे सर्वलोकैकपूजिते । नारायणप्रिये देवि सुप्रीता भव सर्वदा ।
श्री श्रीवरमहालक्ष्म्यै नमः ध्यायामि ॥ - Invoke Sri Varamahalakshmi into the worship.
पुरुष एवेदं सर्वं यद्भूतं यच्च भव्यम् । उतामृतत्वेशानो यदन्नेनातिरोहति ॥
सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये विष्णुवक्षःस्थलालये । आवाहयामि देवि त्वां सुप्रीता भव सर्वदा ॥ - Offer the Aasana and sprinkle Mantrakshata.
सूर्यायुतनिभस्फूर्ते स्फुरद्रत्नविभूषितम् । सिंहासनमिदं देवि गृहाण हरिवल्लभे ॥ - Offer Paadya to the feet and pour water three times into the Tarpana vessel.
सुवासितं जलं रम्यं सर्वतीर्थसमुद्भवम् । पाद्यं गृहाण देवि त्वं सर्वदेव नमस्कृते ॥
पादयोः पाद्यं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Arghya to the hands.
वरमहालक्ष्म्यै नमः हस्तयोः अर्घ्यं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Aachamaniya and pour water three times into the Tarpana vessel.
विष्णुपादोद्भवे देवि सर्वाभरणभूषिते । कृष्णमूर्ते महादेवि कृष्णवेणै नमोस्तुते ॥ - Offer Madhuparka.
मधुपर्कं समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform the Panchamrita Abhisheka using milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar, jaggery and suitable fruits. To observe Chaturmaasya, use only permitted fruits.
पयॊदधिघृतं चैव शर्करामधुसंयुतम् । पञ्चामृतस्नानमिदं गृहाण कमलालये ॥
आप्यायस्व समेतु ते विश्वतः सोम वृष्ण्यम् । भव वाजस्य सङ्गथे ॥
क्षीरेण समर्पयामि ॥
पञ्चामृतस्नानं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer the pure-water bath, pour water into the Arghya vessel, and then offer Aachamaniya.
सिंहपादोद्भवे देवि नारसिंहसमप्रभे । सर्वलक्षणसम्पूर्णे भवनाशिनि ते नमः ॥
शुद्धोदक स्नानं समर्पयामि ॥
स्नानानन्तरम् आचमनीयं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Gangodaka.
विष्णुपादाब्जसम्भूते गङ्गे त्रिपथगामिनि । सर्वपापहरे देवि भागीरथ्यै नमोस्तुते ॥
गङ्गोदकं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer a new dress-pair or offer symbolically with Mantrakshata.
वस्त्रयुग्मं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer the Kanchuka.
त्र्यम्बकजटोद्भूते गौतमस्याघनाशिनि । सप्तधा सागरं याति गोदावरि नमोस्तुते ॥
कञ्चुकं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer new ornaments or offer symbolically with Mantrakshata.
सुवर्णभूषितं दिव्यं नानारत्नसुशोभितम् । त्रैलोक्यपूजिते देवि गृहाणाभरणं शुभम् ॥
नानाविधानि आभरणानि समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Gandha.
कर्पूरागरु कस्तूरी रोचनादिभिरन्वितम् । गन्धं दास्याम्यहं देवि प्रीत्यर्थं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥
गन्धं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Akshata.
श्वेतांश्च चन्द्रवर्णाभान् हरिद्रारञ्जितान् । अक्षतांश्च सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे ददाम्यमुने शुभे ॥
अक्षतं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Haridra, Kumkuma and the other auspicious articles.
कण्ठसूत्रं तालपत्रं हरिद्राकुङ्कुमां जनम् । सिन्दूरादि प्रदास्यामि सौभाग्यं देहि मेऽव्यये ॥
सौभाग्यद्रव्यं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer fragrant flowers.
केतकीजाजिपुन्नागैश्चम्पकैर्वकुलैः शुभैः । पूजयामीच देवेशि यमुने भक्तवत्सले ॥
नानाविध परिमळ पुष्पाणि समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform the Anga Puja, worshipping each corresponding body part.

चञ्चलायै नमः — गुल्फौ पूजयामि ॥

दक्षिणां समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform Mangala Nirajana.
मङ्गलनीराजनं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Mantra Pushpa.
मन्त्रपुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform Pradakshina and Namaskara.
प्रदक्षिण नमस्कारान् समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Arghya and recite the concluding prayer.
अर्घ्यं प्रार्थनां समर्पयामि ॥ - Tie the sacred Dora.
दोरबन्धनं समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer Namaskara to the sacred Dora.
दोरनमस्कारान् समर्पयामि ॥ - Perform Vayana Dana.
वायनदानं समर्पयामि ॥ - Read the Story (see below)
व्रतकथां समर्पयामि ॥ - Offer the entire Puja to Shri Krishna.
यस्य स्मृत्या च नामोक्त्या तपो व्रत पूज क्रियादिषु न्यूनं सम्पूर्णतां याति सद्यो वन्दे तम् अच्युतं ।
मन्त्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं रमापते यत्क्रुतं तु मया देव परिपूर्णम् तदस्तु मे ॥
अनेन श्रीवरमहालक्ष्म्याः ध्यानावाहनादि षोडशोपचार पूजनेन भारति रमण मुख्यप्राणान्तर्गत लक्ष्मीनारायणं प्रीयतां सुप्रीतो वरदो भवतु ।
कायेन वाच मनसेन्द्रियैर् वा बुध्यात्मन वा प्रकृतेर् स्वभावात् ।
करोमि यद्यत् सकलं परस्मै नारायणाय इति समर्पयामि ॥
मध्ये मन्त्र तन्त्र स्वर वर्ण न्यून अतिरिक्त लोप दोश प्रायस्चित्तार्थं नाम त्रयम् जपेत्

अच्युतानन्तगोविन्देभ्यो नमः । नारयाणाय नमः ॥
नाहं कर्ता हरिः कर्ता तत्पूजा कर्मचाखिलं ।
तथापि मत्कृइता पूज तत्प्रसादेन नान्यथा ॥
तद्भक्ति तद्फलं मह्यं तत्प्रसादात् पुनः पुनः ।
कर्मण्यासौ हरौ एवं विष्णोः तृइप्तिकरः सदा ॥
॥ सर्वं श्री कृष्णार्पणमस्तु ॥
The Story of Varamahalakshmi
Formerly, in the city of Kundini, the capital of the kingdom of Vidarbha, there lived a woman named Charumati who was endowed with good conduct and was wholly devoted to serving her husband. Pleased with her exemplary conduct, the compassionate Mahalakshmi appeared one day in Charumati’s dream and said:
“O chaste Charumati! I am Mahalakshmi. Pleased with your virtuous qualities and in accordance with the merit accumulated by you in your previous life, I have come to bestow my grace upon you. If you understand and follow what I am now going to tell you, it will bring you great benefit. Your poverty will be destroyed and you will attain the eight forms of prosperity.
“Therefore, if, on the second Friday of the month of Shravana, at the time of Pradosha, you properly perform my worship according to the prescribed procedure, I will grant you all pleasures and prosperity. Those in this world who worship me with devotion are truly blessed. They are meritorious and worthy of praise. The lives of those who remain outside the range of my gracious glance are indeed futile. Therefore, perform this vrata and become blessed.”
Having thus instructed her in her sleep, Mahalakshmi disappeared.
Charumati then awoke from her sleep in great wonder and told her family everything that had happened. She spent several days joyfully with them, until the second Friday of the month of Shravana arrived. On that day, many devotees, filled with devotion and faith, worshipped Varamahalakshmi according to the procedure prescribed in the Kalpa texts. They were delighted as their wishes were fulfilled and lived happily.
Meanwhile, the impoverished Charumati performed this vrata with discipline and, through the gracious glance of Varalakshmi, attained the eight forms of prosperity. Blessed with sons, grandsons and other descendants, she enjoyed happiness, fed the poor through charity, and lovingly cared for her relatives. Thus she experienced immeasurable and boundless happiness in this world and attained the exalted state of union with her husband in the next world.
Therefore, whoever performs this vrata in this world with devotion will obtain undiminished prosperity and, through the grace of Varalakshmi, enjoy all pleasures and material blessings.
When Parameshwara had finished narrating the story, Parvati asked: “O Lord of Lords! If you have compassion for me, please explain this procedure to me in detail.”
Then Parameshwara explained the procedure of the worship as follows: “O Devi! On the Friday preceding the full moon of the auspicious and merit-bestowing month of Shravana, women or men who have devotion should take an oil bath and, after their ceremonial bath, put on auspicious clothing. In a clean place decorated with rangavali and other adornments, they should construct a beautiful mantapa. In its center, they should draw an eight-petalled lotus using five colors. Upon it, they should place a Kalasha adorned with mango shoots and worship Varamahalakshmi after performing the Prana Pratishthapana.
“Having satisfied the Devi through Shodashopachara Puja, they should give Upayana Dana to a worthy Brahmana. Thereafter, they should feed Brahmana Suvasinis, give generous Dakshina, and listen to this story.”
When Suta Puranika had narrated all this to the sages headed by Shaunaka, the sages were filled with joy.
Whoever performs this Varamahalakshmi Vrata, and whoever listens to this story, will have poverty, suffering and other difficulties destroyed, and will attain all prosperity and blessings, together with the wealth of sons, grandsons and other descendants.
