Arjuna said –
By this supreme secret called Adhyātma, which You have spoken, out of compassion for me, my present delusion (false attachment to relations, etc.) is gone.

O Lotus-eyed, origination and destruction of beings from You have in fact, been heard by me in detail as also Your Imperishable Glory.

O Supreme God, just as You have declared Yourself to be, I desire to see that Omnipenetrative Form of Yours.

O Lord of Yogas, if You think it is possible for me to see that, show me then Your Imperishable Form.

Śrī Bhagavān said –
O Partha, behold My Forms a hundred and thousand-fold, multiple-patterned, multi-coloured and multi-shaped.

O Bhārata, behold the twelve Adityas, the eight Vasus, the eleven Rudras, the two Aśvins and the forty- nine Maruts; behold many wonders never seen before.

O Guḍākeśa, behold here today in My body the whole Universe, static and dynamic, standing together in one place, and whatever else you desire to see.

But you cannot see Me with this, your vision. I shall, therefore, give you the divine eye. Behold My Sovereign Omnipotence.

Sañjaya said –
Having thus spoken, O King the Supreme Lord of Yoga, Hari, then showed to Arjuna His Supreme and Divine Form.

The Form with many mouths and eyes of many marvelous Appearances and Configurations, with many divine ornaments and upraised weapons, wearing divine garlands and vestures, anointed with divine sandal pastes, the Embodiment of all marvels, boundless, with face turned in all directions.

If the effulgence of thousand Suns were to blaze forth simultaneously in the sky, that might resemble the splendour of that Exalted Being.

There the Pāṇḍava saw the whole universe with its manifold division each lying in some one part of the body of the Supreme Deity.

Then, he, Dhanañjaya, over-powered by astonishment, his hair standing on end, bowed his head to the Lord and with folded hands spoke thus:

Arjuna said –
O Lord, I behold in Your body all the gods, all classes of beings, Brahma the four-faced, Rudra seated on the lap of Brahma, the Ṛṣīs and celestial serpents.

I behold you with many arms, bellies, faces and eyes everywhere infinite in form; O Lord of the Universe, of Form Universal I do not see either Your end or middle or beginning.

I behold You with crown, mace, and discus, mass of splendour shining everywhere, impossible to gaze at dazzling on all sides with radiance of flaming fire, and Sun immeasurable.

You are Supreme Akṣara, Supreme Object of Knowledge, the Highest Support of this Universe, Imperishable, the Guardian of Eternal Dharma, I consider You as the Eternal Puruśottama.

I see you as The One without beginning or middle or end, of infinite power, of infinite arms, with the Moon and Sun as Your eyes, I see Your mouth as the blazing sacrificial fire whose radiance consumes this universe.

The space between heaven and earth and also cardinal directions pervaded by You alone. O Mahātma, seeing this wonderful and awesome form of Yours, I see that all the three worlds are greatly alarmed.

The hosts of released gods enter You; some of them out of fear praise You with folded hands and groups of great sages and Siddhas sing the best of hymns in praise of You.

Rudras, Ādityā, Vasus, Sādhyās, Vishvedevas, Aśvins, Maruts, Pitṛs, hosts of Gandharvas, Yakṣās, Asuras, Siddhas all are looking at You and go on marvelling.

O Mighty-Armed, seeing Your Great Form of many mouths and eyes, of many arms, thighs and feet, of many bellies, terrible with fearful teeth, the world is struck with terror and so am I.

O Viśṇu, having seen Your Form touching the sky, blazing and of many colours, with mouths wide open, shining with large radiant eyes, my inmost soul trembles in fear and I cannot have peace of mind.

Seeing Your mouths, terrible with fearful teeth, resembling the flames of Pralayakāla (time of dissolution) I fail to distinguish the directions nor can I find comfort. O Lord of the gods, the abode of the world, be merciful and show me Your grace.

The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, together with the hosts of Kings, Bhīśma, Droṇa and Karṇa along with the foremost warriors on our side, also, are rushing fast into Your mouths having terrible teeth; some are seen caught between Your teeth with their heads pounded.

Just as the rapid water currents of rivers run only towards the sea, so these warriors of the mortal world are rushing to Your flaming mouths.

Just as moths rush with great speed to the blazing fire to their destruction, so also all these people enter into Your mouths with great speed for their own destruction.

Devouring all the worlds on every side with Your flaming mouths, You are licking them again and again; O Viṣṇu, Your fiery rays burn the whole Universe filling it with light.

Tell me who You are with a Form so terrible. I bow down to You, O Foremost Deity, have mercy on me. I wish to know You Who are the Primal Being for I do not understand the course of Your actions.

Śrī Bhagavān said –
I am Kāla, the Destroyer of the world, I am engaged here in destroying all these people; excepting You (and a few others) all the warriors standing arrayed in the opposing armies will cease to be.

Therefore, arise and gain glory conquering the enemies, and enjoy the realm filled with wealth. These warriors are already slain by Me. O Arjuna, You become the nominal instrument in destroying them.

Slay Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadrata, Karṇa and other great warriors who are already slain by Me. Fear not, fight, You will surely conquer the enemies in battle.

Sañjaya said –
Having heard these words of Keshava, with folded hands and trembling, Arjuna bowed again and prostrated himself with great fear and spoke to Kṛṣṇa in a faltering voice.

Arjuna said –
O Hṛṣīkeśa, it is but meet that all good souls are delighted in chanting the glory of Your name; Rākṣāsas are fleeing in terror in all directions and Siddhas are all bowing down before You.

O Exalted Soul, why would they not bow down to You, who are the Most Exalted and greater than Brahma, the creator. O Infinite, God of gods, abode of the worlds, You are the Akṣara (Imperishable) and far higher than the Universe, which is of the nature of being and non-being.

You are the First of Gods, Ancient Person, the Ultimate Resort of this Universe; You are the Knower and the Object to be known and the Supreme Goal. By You is pervaded this Universe. O God of Infinite Forms.

You are Vayu, (Possessor of knowledge and strength), Yama (One devoid of defects), Agni (Inspirer of the universe), Moon (Symbol of extreme happiness), Varuṇa (the receiver of devotees) and Prajāpati (the ruler of the world) and the great grandsire of all: I bow to You a thousand times – again and again, I bow to You.

O Perfect One, I bow before and behind You and on all sides. You are of infinite powers and immeasurable might, You have pervaded everything and therefore, You are All.

Taking You as friend while calling You O Kṛṣṇa, O Yādava, O Friend, whatever I might have spoken without reverence and not knowing Your Glory, out of negligence or through love, and whatever disrespect I might have shown You in jest or at play, in bed or seated or at meals, either alone or in the presence of others although You are Unique Master of Everything, O Acyuta – the Immeasurable, I pray and beg Your pardon and forgiveness for them all.

You are the Father of the moving and the unmoving world. You are the Worshipful and Supreme Venerable Teacher of this world; there is none equal to You; how then could there be one greater than You in three worlds, O Thou of Matchless Glory?

Therefore, bowing down and prostrating myself before You, I pray to You, the Ruler for Your grace, O God, be pleased to bear with me as a father with his son, a friend with his friend, a lover with his beloved.

I am rejoiced at having seen Your Form never seen before and my heart shakes with fear; O Lord of Gods, Support of the Universe, show me now that other familiar form of Yours and be gracious.

I wish to see You as before, with Your crown, mace and discus in the hand. Pray assume again Your Four-armed Form, O Thousand-armed, O Perfect One.

Śrī Bhagavān said –
O Arjuna, by My grace and power this Supreme Form has been shown to You by Me; This form of Mine, which is radiant, perfect, unlimited by time and space and primal has not been seen before by anyone other than Yourself.

O Foremost of Kurus, neither by the study of Vedas, nor sacrifices, nor by gifts nor by ceremonial rites nor by severe austerity, such form of Mine is possible to be seen in this world of men by anyone else but you.

Beholding such a fearful form of Mine as this, do not be afraid or bewildered; with a fearless and joyful heart behold again My form, familiar to You.

Sañjaya said –
Vāsudeva, having thus spoken to Arjuna, showed him again His own (familiar) form. The High-Souled Kṛṣṇa having assumed again the gentle form comforted the terrified Arjuna.

Arjuna said –
Beholding again this, Your gentle human form, O Janārdana, I am now calm and self-possessed and I am restored to my original condition.

Śrī Bhagavān said –
This form of Mine which you have beheld and which even the Gods long to behold is hard to see.

I cannot be seen in the form now seen by you, either by the study of Vedas or by mean of austerities, gifts and sacrifices.

But, O Parantapa (oppressor of enemies), by unswerving devotion to Me alone, I may be seen, truly known and reached.

He who does duties to Me, to whom I am the Supreme Being, who is My devotee, who is free from attachment to fruits of action, and who is no enemy to other beings comes unto Me, O Pāṇḍava.

Thus ends the Eleventh Chapter of the Upaniśads of the Bhagavad Gīta entitled “Viśvarūpadarśana Yoga”, the Yoga of the Vision of Universal Form.
