Deepavali Paddhati

हरि सर्वोत्तम । वायु जीवोत्तम | श्री गुरुभ्यो नमः

Yamadeepa: Saayam Sandhya kaala on Trayodashi

  • Wash hands, feet an around the evening dusk time, near the angaLa tulaSi kaTTe, facing south setup a lamp made of iron and til oil with the prayer: मृत्युना पाशदण्दाभ्यां कालेन श्यामया सह । त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात् सूर्यजः प्रियतां मम ॥
    • Along with kaala and mRutya devata-s, holding on to PaashaNda the son of Surya, may the Lord of Shyaamala, Yama be pleased
  • Everyone in the house (male, female, children, elders) should say the shloka and light the lamp and pray to Lord Yama. (If there is only one lamp, after it is lit just lift and put it back down – no need to relight)
  • यमाय धर्मराजाय मृत्यवे च अन्तकाय च । वैवस्वताय कालाय सर्वभूत क्षयाय च ॥ औदुम्बराय दद्नाय नीलाय परमेष्ठिने । वृकोदराय चित्राय चित्रगुप्ताय वै नमः ॥
  • (प्रमाण/फल: आशिवनस्यासिते पक्षे त्रयोदश्यां निशामुखे । यमदीपं बहिर्दद्यात् अपमृत्यु: विनश्यति prevents apamRtyu, i.e. untimely death)

JalapoorNa: Before 2100 (9PM) on Trayodashi

  • Taking well water, praying to Ganga and other teertha-s, remembering Varuna,  Lord of Ganga, do pooja of matsyanaarayaNa. Taking well water in a copper vessel, pour it into a haNde decorated with rangoli placed on a ‘vale’ (stove) with picture of shankha chakra on it.
  • गंगे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति । नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि चन्द्रभागे च कौशिकि ॥ स्वर्णलेखे कनखले पारिभद्रे च गण्डकि । श्वेतगंगे चन्द्ररेखे पंपे चंपे च गोमति ॥ पद्मावति विपर्णाशे विपाशे विरजे प्रभे । शतह्रदे चेलगन्गे जलेऽस्मिन् सन्निधिं कुरु ॥
  • वरुण धवलो जिष्णुः नक्रस्थो निम्नगाधिपः पाशहस्तो महाबाहुः तस्मै नित्यं नमो नमः ।

Abhyanga Snaana: Braahma muhurte (0324 AM) on Chaturdashi

  • Wake up, finish shoucha, wash hands and face. In front of devaru, bring one tambige of hot and cold water each (not steel) and oil for abhyanga
  • Do aavahana of Lakshmi and Ganga in oil and water respectively, offer the abhyanga to Lord HimselfDo smaraNe of chiranjeevis (hanuma, bali, kRupa, vibheeshaNa, maarkaNDeya, ashwattama) take the oil offered to Lord and do yeNNe shaastra for 2 younger people at a time and offer to olders to do it themselves, and then apply to yourself.
  • Finish bath by 0521 AM During bath peel off uttaraNe plant on your head three times with prayer: सीतालोष्ठ समायुक्त सकण्टक दळान्वित । हर पापं अपामर्ग भ्राम्यमाणः पुनः पुनः
  • (प्रमाण/फल: आशिवनस्यासिते पक्षे चतुर्दश्यां विधोदय । स्नातव्यं तिलतैलेन नरैः नरक-भीरुभीः)

Yama tarpaNa: After morning Pooja on Chaturdashi

  • Face South and with yeLLu in hand offer tarpaNa with mantras below. Water should be offer on the palm and flow straight down the finger tips and fall into the harivaaNa/paatre
  • यमं तर्पयामि । धर्मराजं तर्पयामि । मृत्युं तर्पयामि । अन्तकं तर्पयामि । वैवस्वतं तर्पयामि । कालं तर्पयामि । सर्वभूतक्स्ःअयं तर्पयामि । औदुम्बरं तर्पयामि । दध्नं तर्पयामि । नीलं तर्पयामि । परमेष्ठिनं तर्पयामि । वृकोदरं तर्पयामि । चित्रं तर्पयामि ।
  • (प्रमाण/फल: दीपोत्सव चतुर्दश्यां कार्यं तु यमतर्पणं । जीवत्पितापि कुर्वीत तर्पणं यम भीष्मयोः || i.e. even those with father alive should offer thanks via tarpaNaM)

DeepavaLi: After sunset on Chaturdashi, Amaavaasya and PaaDyami

  • Light til oil lamps of four wicks inside and outside all around the house. Ideally East and North facing
  • दत्तो दीपः चतुर्दश्यां नरकप्रीतये मय । चतुर्वर्ति-समायुक्तः सर्वपापापनुत्तये ॥
  • Perform the same deepotsava on the next 2 days also

GooDudeepa:  After sunset on Chaturdashi

  • On top of a high wooden stick, in an eight-sided maNtapa of bidiru, light a til oil lamp in the eastern direction
  • Do this for a month saying the aakasha deepa shloka:
    • दामोदराय नभसि तुलायां डोलया सह । प्रदीपं ते प्रदास्यामि नमो अनन्ताय वेधसे ॥ यमलोकं परित्यज्य आगता ये महालये । उज्ज्वल ज्योतिषा वर्त्म प्रपश्यन्तु प्रजन्तु ते ॥
    • (प्रमाण/फल: निवेद्य धर्माय हराय भूम्यै दामोदराव्यथ धर्मराज्ञे । प्रजाप्रतिभ्यः त्वथ सत्-पितृभ्यः एव अथ तमः स्थितेभ्यः तुलायां तिलतैलेन सायंकाले समागते आकाशदीपं यो दद्यात् मासं एकम् हरिं प्रति । महतीं श्रियं आप्नोति रूप-सौभाग्य सम्पदं, i.e. who offers tila depa in evening during tula month to Lord Hari, obtains immense wealth, good fortune and good assets (knowledge))

ToDar:  By 2100 (9PM) on Chaturdashi

  • To bidaru stick tie a cotton cloth and with til oil and light it.
  • Show it around the courtyard, garden and farm and after saying this prayer, stick it in the ground:
  • अग्निदग्धास्च ये जीवाः ये अपि अद्गधाः कुले मम । उज्ज्वल ज्योतिषा दग्धाः ते यान्तु परमां गतिं ॥
    • Those in my family who have died in a fire accident or other lives lost due to calamity, by the power of this light and blessing of Agni NaarayaNa, let them attain sadgati

LakshmI Pooja: On Amaavaasya during UshaH kaala, i.e. 0430 (AM)

  • Take abhyanga etc. bath and finish devara pooja
  • Light lamps inside and outside all around the house show mangaLaarati deepa to devaru, take the same aarati to all the rooms, tulaSi, cowshed, well, garden, farm etc. while chanting Lakshmi stotra
  • Come back into the house and place the aarati on dhaanyaraashi (nava dhaaanyas) in the in the middle of the hall.
  • गन्धद्वारां नित्य पुष्टां करिषिणीं । ईश्वरीं सर्व भूतानां तामिपोह्वये श्रियं ॥
  • सर्व मंगल मांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थ साधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारयणि नमोस्तुते ॥
  • (प्रमाण/फल: प्रत्यूष आश्वयौकदर्शे कृत्यभ्यंगादि मंगळः ॥ भक्त्या सम्पूजयेत् लक्ष्मीं अलक्ष्मी विनिव्रित्तये , i.e. … pray to Lakshmi and She will rid you of lack of fortune)

Go-Pooja: After every morning japa and pooja

  • Feed the cow(s) with good go-graasa, and decorate them
  • Do pooja to Gopalakrishna and Lakshmi and do pradakshina and praarthane to the cow
  • लक्ष्मीर्या लोकपालानं धेनुरूपेण सम्स्थिता । घृतं वहति यज्ञार्थे मम पापं व्यपोहतु ॥
  • नमो गोभ्यः श्रीमतीभ्यः सौरभेयीभ्य एव च । नमो ब्रह्मसुताभ्यश्च पवित्राभ्यो नमोनमः ॥
  • Go-pooja can also be conducted on aashvija kRuShNa ashThami

Baliindra Pooja: On Paadyami within 2230 (10:30 PM)

  • Pray to Baliindra outside the house as servant of Lord Vaamana
  • Light dondi deepa and pray to Lord Vaamana, then His Consort Sukhaalaye and offer their prasaada, flowers, tulasi, gandha and naivedya to Bali
  • बलिराज नमस्तुभ्यं दैत्यदानव-वन्दित । इन्द्रसेनमराराते विष्णूसान्निध्यदो भव ॥
  • बलिराजोयं नमस्तुभ्यं दीपोऽयं प्रतिगृह्यतां
  • Lord Narayaana’s first-born Chaturmakha Brahma’s son Mareechi gave birth to Kashyapa who begot Hiranyakashipu, whose son is Prahlaada the great Narasimha bhakta. Baliraaja is the grandson of Prahlaada – the son of Virochana, the father of BaaNa and husband of VindhyaavaLi. Bali’s granddaughter Usha is the wife of Aniruddha, grandson of Lord Krishna.
