Introduction:

  • Note that the title is Shri-Shrisha Guna Darpana тАУ a mirror reflection by Shri Vaadiraaja Teertha of the supreme qualities of *both* Lakshmi and Narayana. This is because worship of Lakshmi alone or Narayana alone are not useful to gain wealth of knowledge or material nature.
  • History records that Shri Vaadiraaja Teertha composed this work to alleviate King Achyuta Raaya of poverty during a famine and subsequently chanted and taught it to uplift many Brahmins from poverty.
  • Tradition is to chant this preceding and following Narayana Varma for maximum effect – counts of 1000, 100, 54, 28, 12, 8 or 5. (More info)
  • This work also mirrors the Shri Sukta from Rig Veda thus making it effectively available for those who do not have Brahmopadesha and thus lack eligibility to directly study Veda-s.

She (рдпрд╛) whose divine fragrance (рд╕реБрдЧрдиреНрдз) issues forth from all the nine openings (рдирд╡-рджреНрд╡рд╛рд░рд╛) such as the nose (рдирд╛рд╕рд╛-рдЖрджрд┐) of Her transcendental body (рдЕрд╕реНрдп), who pervades all existence completely (рдЕрдЦрд┐рд▓реЗрди), who is invincible and beyond assault (рджреБрд░рд╛рдзрд░реНрд╖рд╛), and who [as Bhoodevi] causes (рдХрд░реАрд╖рд┐рдгреА) the arising and growth (рдЙрджрдп-рдЕрд░реНрдердВ) of all vegetation and crops (рд╕рд░реНрд╡-рд╕рд╕реНрдп).

  • тАЬрдирд╡-рджреНрд╡рд╛рд░тАЭ refers to the nine openings of the d]ivine body. Unlike ordinary beings, LakshmiтАЩs body is apraakruta (transcendental and beyond material defects).

Therefore my Lord (рдордо рдирд╛рдереЗрди) is never displeased (рди рд╡рд┐рдордирд╛рдГ рд╕реНрдпрд╛рддреН) with You, nor is He ever apart from You (рди рд╕ рддреНрд╡рдпрд┐).

  • тАЬрд╕рдордирд╛тАЭ here indicates equality in eternal coexistence across all places and times тАФ not equality in supremacy with Narayana. This is an important Maadhva clarification: Lakshmi is superior to all beings, yet eternally subordinate to Hari.
  • тАЬрдЕрдпреЛрдЧрд┐рдиреАтАЭ means тАЬnever separated,тАЭ affirming the inseparable union of Lakshmi and Narayana even during Pralaya. Since Lakshmi perfectly reflects HariтАЩs will, there can never be disagreement or discord between Them.

  • The LordтАЩs chest is traditionally called тАЬрд╢реНрд░реАрд╡рддреНрд╕рд╕реНрдерд▓тАЭ because Lakshmi eternally resides there.
  • тАЬрдЕрдЪреНрдпреБрддтАЭ means the One who never falls from His nature, qualities, supremacy, or relationship with Lakshmi. Even during Mahaa-Pralaya, when all worlds dissolve, Lakshmi and Narayana remain eternally united.

Both of You (рдпреБрд╡рд╛рдВ) are eternally youthful (рдпреБрд╡рд╛рдиреМ рд╕рддрддрдВ), and between You two (рдпреБрд╡рдпреЛрдГ) there is no difference of age (рди рд╡рдпрдГ-рдЕрдзрд┐рдХрдГ).

You are the mother (рдЬрдирдиреА) of lotus-born Brahma (рдкрджреНрдо-рдЙрджреНрднрд╡рд╕реНрдп), and You Yourself are Padma (рдкрджреНрдорд╛), possessing excellent divine complexion and form (рд╡рд░-рд╡рд░реНрдгрд┐рдиреА).

  • тАЬPadmanabhaтАЭ refers to Narayana from whose navel-lotus Brahma manifests. Lakshmi is called the mother of Brahma because all creation proceeds through Her divine mediation under HariтАЩs will.

May that Goddess Ramaa (рд╕рд╛ рд░рдорд╛) always protect me (рдорд╛рдВ рдкрд╛рддреБ рд╕рджрд╛), whom (рдпрд╛рдореН) the foremost among the wise gods (рд╡рд┐рдмреБрдз-рд╢реНрд░реЗрд╖реНрдард╛рдГ) beginning with Brahma (рдмреНрд░рд╣реНрдо-рдЖрджреНрдпрд╛рдГ), and the celestial women (рд╕реБрд░-рдЕрдЩреНрдЧрдирд╛рдГ) beginning with Saraswati (рдмреНрд░рд╣реНрдорд╛рдгреА-рдЖрджреНрдпрд╛рдГ), worship (рдкреВрдЬрдпрдиреНрддрд┐) and serve (рд╕реЗрд╡рдиреНрддреЗ).

  • This verse establishes LakshmiтАЩs supremacy over all other deities and divine consorts, second only to Narayan.

I praise Lakshmi and Narayana (рддреМ), who are adorned with all ornaments (рд╕рд░реНрд╡-рдЕрд▓рдЩреНрдХрд╛рд░-рднрд░рд┐рддреМ), embellished with all auspicious qualities (рд╕рд░реНрд╡-рд╕рджреНрдЧреБрдг-рдордгреНрдбрд┐рддреМ), and who bestow (рд╡рд┐рдзрд╛рдпрдХреМ) every kind of prosperity and fulfilment (рд╕рд░реНрд╡-рд╕рдореНрдкрджреН) upon the multitude of all devotees (рд╕рд░реНрд╡-рднрдХреНрдд-рдУрдШ), beginning with Lord Shiva (рд╢рд░реНрд╡-рдЖрджрд┐).

  • тАЬрд╕рдореНрдкрджреНтАЭ includes not merely material wealth, but devotion, wisdom, dharma, vairagya, and grace towards liberation.

  • тАЬрдЪрд┐рддреН-рддрдиреВтАЭ indicates Their bodies are not material but composed entirely of pure consciousness and bliss.

I worship that Goddess (рдпрд╛ рджреЗрд╡реА), who has four braided tresses (рдЪрддреБрдГ-рдХрдкрд░реНрджрд╛), who is praised (рд╕реНрддреБрддрд╛) by Brahma and others beginning with the four-faced one (рдЪрддреБрд░-рдЖрд╕реНрдп-рдЖрджрд┐рднрд┐рдГ), whose qualities are proclaimed by the four Vedas (рдЪрддреБрд░реНрд╡реЗрдж-рдЙрджрд┐рдд-рдЧреБрдгрд╛), and who is beloved (рдкреНрд░рд┐рдпрд╛) of Lord Hari (рд╣рд░реЗрдГ) in His fourfold forms (рдЪрддреБрд░реНрдореВрд░реНрддреЗрдГ).

  • тАЬрдЪрддреБрд░реНрдореВрд░реНрддрд┐тАЭ refers to the four Vyuuha forms: Vaasudeva, Sankarshana, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha.

A mortal person (рдорд░реНрддреНрдпрдГ), reciting (рдкрдардиреН) this hymn (рдЗрдордВ рд╕реНрддрд╡рдВ), the Shri-Shrisha-Guna-Darpana (рд╢реНрд░реА-рд╢реНрд░реАрд╢-рдЧреБрдг-рджрд░реНрдкрдгрдореН) composed (рд░рдЪрд┐рддрдВ) by Shri Vaadiraaja (рд╡рд╛рджрд┐рд░рд╛рдЬреЗрди), shall become endowed with prosperity and auspicious wealth (рд╢реНрд░реАрдорд╛рдиреН рд╕реНрдпрд╛рддреН); of this there is no doubt (рди рдЕрддреНрд░ рд╕рдВрд╢рдпрдГ).
