To:
that all-pervading Lord (विभुं);
With the form of a Scorpion* (मकराकृतिम्) below (अधस्थान) the navel (नाभेर्);
Who shines (विलसन्) with a human-like form (नृ-कायम्) in the section above (तद्-ऊर्ध्व-भागे);
In Whose own tail and body (स्वपुच्छ-देह्) reside (आश्रित) the Moon and the Sun (चंद्र-सूर्यम्);
Who embodies (आकृतिम्) stars (नक्षत्र), constellations (तारा), and the Pole-Star system (ध्रुव-मण्डल);
To that Lord of Lakhsmi (इन्दिरेशं);
To the giver of progeny and all other desires (पुत्रादि-सर्वेष्टदम्);
To that cosmic prime mover (मेषं), Shimshumara (शिंशुमारं) ;
I bow (नतोऽस्मि) from my heart (हृदयि)
.

One should meditate (ध्यायेत्) upon:
the Lord of Everything (अजेशं);
the ruler of all the worlds (लोकेशं);
Who abides (आश्रितम्) in the Pole Star system (ध्रुवमण्डलम्):
the radiant (अंशुमारं) Shimshumara (शिंशुमारं);
whose cosmic form (मण्डलं) is in the form of (आकृतिम्) a coiled earring (कुण्डल्).

Hari (हरिः) the Supreme (परः) Shimshumara (शिंशुमारो), is the support (आधारः) of the complete (अशेष) universe (जगद्). All (सर्वे) those with true knowledge (ब्रह्माविदो), having bowed to Him (नत्वा तं) attain (यान्ति) the supreme abode (परमं पदम्).

We meditate (धीमहि) upon the Supreme Person (महापुरुषाय), the Energizer of all the worlds (ज्योतिर्लोकाय), the regulator of time (कालायनाय) and the ruler (पतये) of every infinitesimal moment (निमिषां).

Notes:

  • Shimshumara, as described in Bhagavata Purana 5.23, is the direct manifestation of the Lord in a half-man half-scorpion form, and is the embodiment of complete bliss and knowledge
  • *Although मकर is usually translated to “Crocodile”, it has other interpretations including aquatic forms and half-aquatic half-terrestrial forms.
  • In inverted pose, Shimshumara bears the entire celestial universe with Pole Star system at the tip of His tail with Brahma on top of Meru mountain, the nine planets and 27 major constellations residing in Him, with the rest on his body hairs.
  • Meditation upon this form daily, especially during Kalasha pooja, results in freedom from all afflictions due to planetary positions (ग्रह दोष), destruction of sins, health, longevity and prosperity – and most of all, fulfillment of righteous intentions.
  • In Lakshmi Shobhana, Shimshura is described as the controller of time who diminishes everyone’s life, including devata-s. Only He can be Lakshmi’s consort since He is the only Eternally and Unchanging One.
24॥ (See HERE)
(See HERE) describes Lord Shimshumara as pervading the whole universe and bearing all its stellar forms.
